For After Hours (on Call) Sick/Injury Problems:
For night or early morning problems that need prompt attention
(before the regular office hours start or before 8:00 weekends),
    Call 828-328-1118

Here is How it Works:

After-Hours Monday through Friday (after 5PM or so):
Except Holidays (see weekend info below):
After 5PM, call the same number 828-328-1118.

    Either,
If a nurse or doctor is still in the office and available
for the phone, then they will talk to you,

    -or-
You will be directed to the nursing triage service
who will:
       - either handle you problem over the phone,
       - or conference with the pediatrician on call,
       - or direct you to come in the next morning,
       - or send you to an urgent care or emergency room.

Regarding the Nurse Telephone Triage Service:
Mr. Millsaps, as well as the majority of pediatricians in the area,
has used this Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center
triage service for many years and they are excellent. They are
quite knowledgeable and will answer your questions, following
well designed and carefully written protocols. The will carefully
direct your child's care, either over the phone, or they may, again
by written protocol, conference with the doctor "on-call" by phone.
(Click here for information about the pediatrician on-call). They may,
if necessary, direct you to an urgent care center or emergency room.
They are backed by a strong team at Baptist, and, again, if they
have     questions, they conference through to us by phone. We
also receive FAXes from them the next day providing us a
written report on the phone conversation.

This is an expensive service for us to provide free for you about
$10/call, but we feel that it is important for you to have this available
to you as a parent. Please try to use some discretion, and use
reasonable judgment, and not call about minor problems that
could not wait until the morning.

    Other After-hour Resources:

      Books:
Please refer to the excellent books we have
recommended to you as "bibles of child care", especially
the books from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
For more on these Click Here - excellent &
inexpensive. If it save you one doctor or ER visit
or one sleepless night, then it is more than paid for.

About 700+ pages and 1000s of topics.

      Internet:
In this website, we have provided you many links
to excellent resources, providing informations and
                      recommendations about 1000s of topics.

Weekend and/or Holiday Mornings:
    At 8:00-9:00 call 828-328-1118 - Office-based urgent care
is usually available if needed (either in our office of in the office
of one of our call group ... Unifour Peds of ChildHealth Peds).
State that you child is sick, the nature of the problem and how
and when you can be reached (phone, work, cellular, etc.)
Call at 8:00-9:00 if you need to be seen in an office setting.

Weekend Office Hours: We are NOT routinely open for full
service well-child check-ups, sports physicals, etc. As you might
expect, to be open for extensive full office operation for the
whole weekend would be far too expensive ... weekend pay
differential, and for many other extra weekend expenses involved
with routine full office care on weekends. Per healthcare
insurance rules (regarding weekends and holidays), we are not
permitted to publish office hours on Saturdays, Sundays, and
holidays, as these would then be considered regular care, and
they would not cover this. However, if you call us at 8:00-
9:00AM on a Saturdays or Sundays (and some holidays),
we can usually see a "SICK or INJURED" child (not a
well child) that morning in in an office setting, either at
Unifour Pediatrics or at ChildHealth center (who shares
      call with us).
If, instead, you wait until the afternoon, then an
office-based visit for sick/injured care may not be possible.

Lacerations (cuts), deep puncture wounds, significant burns,
and other serious injuries and problems should NOT wait
     until Mondays or mornings
, and, at a minimum, a call should
     be made.

Weekend and Holiday Afternoons and Nights on (same as after hours weekdays):
(After available sick/injured office visit possibilities)

Follows the same protocols as with after hours calls
during the weekending after the office closes, which is:

     Either,
If a nurse or doctor is still in the office and available
for the phone, then they will talk to you,

      -or-
You will be directed to the nursing triage service who will:
       - either handle you problem over the phone,
       - or conference with the pediatrician on call,
       - or direct you to come in the next morning,
       - or send you to an urgent care or emergency room.

ER Coverage in Emergency Rooms:

If you need to be seen in the Emergency Room, both Catawba
Valley Medical Center and Frye Regional Medical Center have
excellent emergeny rooms and well as excellent emergency room
physicians and nurses. If needed, the emergency room staff will
see you there and provide you the needed services. In
circumstances where a specialty pediatrician is needed for
consultation purposes, or should you child need to be hospitalized,
we use an excellent pediatric hostital specialty physicians, who do
exclusely inpatient care of pediatric patients. This group, Sam
Wellman, MD FAAP. and David Berry MD FAAP, of the
    Hickory Pediatric and Neonatology Services
, has worked with
Dr. Millsaps for many years, and he has been very pleased with
    the care they provide.

Urgent Care Centers:

This may be a cheaper option for you, because the total cost
is ususally lower, and the copay is also usually lower.
